I have visions of this particular class scenario, whereby the teacher comes into class, beams and says, "Hey, we have an all girls class!" then stops short, looks at me in disbelief. Squints for a second, then "Dude, are you in the wrong class?" and I'll say "Nope, I'm in the English course." My classmates are all females, and I'm feeling decidedly jumpy; this isn't helping. To ease the ongoing confusion and my professor's growing discomfort, I say, helpfully. "Sir, you might want to look under register no. 17." My classmates are sniggering around me. After all the mental preparation, my dear mentor has to do a Mr Quek'04.

It's not exactly bothering me tremendously, but. . it's happened all too often to actually play it down as a mere coincidence, isn't it? Infuriating, the way educators put on the very wise look, gaze at me gravely, and say, "Jx, your name is a girl's name. I'm sorry", the way a less accomplished brain surgeon would say to a tumour "I'm sorry, I can't remove you. Hence your residential body is dead." I don't need a diagnosis, just an open mind.

The situation is made even more bizarre, since both my parents unanimously agree that my name is the result of pure genius and abstract creativity. They've never really given up patting each other on the back.

Let me explain: According to dear Mom and Dad, the first character of my name means excellent in chinese. Top notch. The second implies the very essence of a gentleman.

However, it doesn't really help that all the other well-known people carrying my namesake are all rather attractive females. Think Selina of S.H.E, and a top model in China. The only other guy I can find is the Chinese Foreign Minister, and I don't think anyone really knows of his existence. I know I wouldn't, if I hadn't spent all that time on google. Locally, I've had good fortune to encounter really delightful ladies, whom explode into fits of giggles upon knowing we share a similar name. Which about shreds every possible trace of male-dominating-dignity.

I do like my name. I really do. But I won't mind falling in love with a girl possessing the same name as I too. It's a sweet name. Sigh.
